You've been looking into wedding photography and may have noticed costs ranging from $1,000 to $10,000. You might be wondering why wedding photography is so expensive. If you're not in the industry, it can be hard to understand and easy to question the cost. There's a common misconception that photography is overpriced, and it's easy to forget that running a business involves many jobs and costs beyond the actual wedding day.

In this blog post, I will share the reasons behind the cost of wedding photography and how much you can expect to invest, from a low-budget to a luxury photographer in Melbourne.

Behind the Scenes: The Work that Goes into a Wedding Photography Business

As someone who's still fairly new to the industry, I want to share some insights into what it took to build a wedding photography business.  Over the past year, since I began my journey as a wedding photographer and started offering my services, I've noticed the common misconception that photography is overpriced. Many might assume it's as straightforward as posting on Instagram, maintaining a website, receiving inquiries, booking weddings, and then capturing and delivering the photos. However, there's significantly more involved.

Running a photography business comes with a substantial list of costs. These include investing in high-quality gear, paying for subscriptions and education, and covering various business expenses. In the past year, I've spent money on everything from new equipment to educational courses, software fees, subscriptions, and taxes.

One surprising fact is that photographers spend only 10-20% of their time actually photographing. The remaining 80-90% is spent on administrative tasks, marketing, planning and editing. This includes maintaining a website, managing social media, handling client meetings, and optimizing for SEO. All these tasks require ongoing effort and dedication.

When you think about it, being a photographer means juggling multiple roles. It’s not just about capturing beautiful moments but also about running a business efficiently. From marketing and client relations to administrative work and continuous learning, the journey of a wedding photographer is both challenging and rewarding.
